چکیده
We report upper limits on CO J=2–1 and CO J=5–4 emission from the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at z = 5.73 from observations made with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association Array. Previously reported limits on CO J=6–5 emission (Iwata et al. 2001) were obtained at z = 5.80, which is now thought to be off by 1%, and the observations likely missed the relevant redshifts for molecular gas. The new 3σ upper limits on the line luminosities are L ′ CO (2 − 1) < 5.1 × 10 10 K km s −1 pc 2 and L ′ CO (5 − 4) < 3.0 × 10 10 K km s −1 pc 2 , assuming 200 km s −1 linewidth. The CO J=5–4 observations place an upper limit on warm, dense molecular gas mass comparable to amounts derived for some other high redshift quasar systems from detections of this line. The limit on CO J=2–1 emission suggests that excitation bias does not affect this conclusion. In addition, no molecular gas rich companion galaxies are found in a ∼ 1.4 Mpc field surrounding the quasar.

What Is the Highest Plausible Redshift of Luminous Quasars?
The recent discoveries of luminous quasars at high redshifts imply that black holes more massive than a few billion solar masses have been assembled already when the universe was less than a billion years old. We show that the existence of these black holes is not surprising in popular hierarchical models of structure formation. For example, the black hole needed to power the quasar SDSS 1044-0...
متن کامل6 − 5 ) Observations of the Quasar SDSS 1044 − 0125 at z = 5 . 8
We present a result of the quasar CO(J = 6− 5) observations of SDSSp J104433.04−012502.2 at z = 5.8. Ten-days observations with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array yielded an rms noise level of ∼ 2.1 mJy beam in a frequency range from 101.28 GHz to 101.99 GHz at a velocity resolution of 120 km s. No significant clear emission line was detected in the observed field and frequency range. Three sigma up...
متن کاملA study of quasar selection in the supervova fields of the Dark Energy Survey
We present a study of quasar selection using the supernova fields of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We used a quasar catalog from an overlapping portion of the SDSS Stripe 82 region to quantify the completeness and efficiency of selection methods involving color, probabilistic modeling, variability, and combinations of color/ probabilistic modeling with variability. In all cases, we considered o...
متن کاملM , OF MOLECULAR GAS IN THE HOST GALAXY OF THE z p 5 . 77 SDSS QUASAR
We have detected emission by the CO(5–4) and (6–5) rotational transitions at from the z p 5.7722 0.0006 host galaxy of the SDSS quasar J0927 2001 using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. The peak line flux density for the CO(5–4) line is mJy, with a line FWHM p 610 110 km s . The implied molecular gas 1 0.72 0.09 mass is M . We also detect the 90 GHz continuum at mJy, consistent with a 10 (1.6...
متن کاملThe Sdss Damped Lyα Survey: Data Release 1 the Quasar Sample Was Drawn from Data Release 1 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to a Limiting Pertosian Mag- 1
We present the results from an automated search for damped Lyα (DLA) systems in the quasar spectra of Data Release 1 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR1). At z ≈ 2.5, this homogeneous dataset exceeds the statistical significance of the previous two decades of research. We derive a statistical sample of 71 damped Lyα systems (> 50 previously unpublished) at z > 2.1 and measure H I column...
